Utah Rolls Past Idaho 59-14 in Morgan Scalley’s First Win as Head Coach

Utah opened the 2026 season with a statement, rolling past Idaho 66-14 on Thursday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The win marked the first victory for Morgan Scalley as Utah’s head coach and gave the Utes plenty of positives to build on moving forward.

Quarterback Devon Dampier and running back Way-Shawn Parker showed just how dangerous Utah’s offense can be. The Utes were able to move the ball consistently and put up points throughout the game. There were a few moments where Utah appeared to get a little too comfortable, but some of that could have been from resting plays against an Idaho team that struggled to keep up.

Utah’s defense also had a strong night, but the run defense left a few things to clean up. Idaho was able to break off several explosive runs, giving the Utes something to work on heading into their next game. Overall, however, Utah’s defense kept control of the game and helped the offense stay in a comfortable position.

One of the bright spots on offense was Braden Pegan, who looked ready to take on a big role at receiver. The lengthy transfer from Utah State made plays and gave Dampier another option in the passing game. His performance could be something to watch as the season continues.

The win also gave Scalley his first victory as Utah’s head coach. Utah scored 66 points, its most in a game since Sept. 10, 2022, when the Utes scored 73 against Southern Utah.

There is still plenty for Utah to improve on, especially defensively against the run, but a 66-14 win is a strong way to start the season. With Dampier, Parker and a number of other playmakers leading the way, the Utes showed that this offense could be dangerous.
